I don’t know about you, but I often encounter sites where a valid e-mail address is required before you can get whatever it is you came there for; a tutorial, a free download, whatever. (Personally I don’t consider it a FREE download if I am paying for it with valuable information, i.e. my e-mail address!)

You know how it goes, first you have to supply a valid e-mail address. Then, they either send a validation link on which you have to click or they send your login information to that email address. This is so that they know you actually provided a “real” e-mail address.

After you go through these steps, you are then granted access to the “private” content, which may or may not be worth all the effort. And now they have your email address and you’ll start to get all sorts of unwanted offers from third parties or those horrible promotional newsletters.

I hesitate to use my business e-mail in cases like these, where the value I am getting is an individual item or temporary access. I hate even more to give out my personal e-mail in such cases. I had gone so far as to create a Hotmail address just for these situations!

Luckily for me one of my teachers at College (she taught us the Security part of the program) told me about a site called GuerrillaMail. At GuerrillaMail they will automatically create a temporary e-mail address for you which will stay active for 15 minutes and doesn’t require you to enter a single shred of information.

So, the next time you find yourself in this situation, go to GuerrillaMail and get a FREE e-mail address. The beauty of this arrangement is you get the automatically generated email address on the spot and then you automatically go to the inbox for that email address – no login required and no signup. No more creating a Yahoo! or Hotmail account just to serve as a junk email address.

Whether you have a website, a company intranet, or just a bunch of client files on your laptop, you’ll want to keep that data secure.
